Harry Kane. One of the best strikers of our time, and quite possibly of history. The greatest goalscorer in Tottenham’s history, missing only one thing. Trophies.
Throughout his career he has had many successes that have slipped through his fingers and so the English puncher continues to collect only individual awards and individual milestones.
Final disappointments
Kane may have already won a number of trophies. During his career he has played several finals matches, always coming away with his head down in the loser’s bracket.
In 2015, Tottenham played the final game of the League Cup against Chelsea. Spurs lost 0:2. In 2017, the Roosters were once again looking at the back of their unpopular opponent from the blue part of London, as in the 2016/17 season Mauricio Pochettino’s charges finished second in the Premier League table.
Two years later, Tottenham Hotspur had a major sensation on their hands. After a crazy semi-final match against Ajax, it secured its qualification to the Champions League final, where its footballers measured their strength with another English team – Liverpool. Again, Harry was left with nothing but tears.
The year 2021 gave Kane another chance to win at least a small trophy in the form of the League Cup. Spurs were then under interim coach Ryan Mason, who replaced Jose Mourinho before the final game. They failed to win the game and fell to Manchester City by the narrowest possible margin of 0-1.
The same year, the English national football team reached the final of the European Championship. After a thrilling final match, they lost to Italy after a penalty shoot-out.
Trophy security at Bayern?
Before the start of the current season, the English goalscorer made a big decision and joined the ranks of the most successful German club – Bayern Munich – for 100 million euros. Kane basically had two options. Stay in north London, fighting to break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record, or choose the path of almost certain and much coveted trophies.
Even though Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was convinced that the former was the more challenging option, Kane opted for a change of venue. What’s more? Just after completing the transfer itself, Bayern played the final game of the German Super Cup against Leipzig. What he had failed to do in several years at Tottenham, he could manage in his first competitive match in the new jersey. As fate would have it?
However, the latter was not kind to the Englishman again and the joy of his first career trophy had to be postponed. The Bavarian club fell 0:3 in the season opener.
We can already say with certainty that Thomas Tuchel’s charges will not win the German Cup either, in which they sensationally crashed out against third-tier Saarbrücken. And in the league? Bayer Leverkusen, who under the leadership of Xabi Alonso have had an incredible start to the new season, are still in first place in the league table with a four-point lead after the start of the second half.
Harry Kane himself did not seem to need acclimatization. He is firing sharply in the domestic competition and leads the scorers’ table. It would be a huge sensation if Bayern Munich fell in the battle for the league championship and the Bundesliga had a new champion after eleven years.
But the season is still long. As it may already seem, winning the championship may not be a sure thing for the Bavarian big club this year either. It would be an irony of fate if they broke their championship streak the moment Harry Kane joined them.
